Fruit Flies Getting Out Of Control? What You Should Do
Fruit flies are very tiny flies that like to be around fruit, which is how they were given their name, but they can be around other areas that contain moisture, such as indoor plants or drains. Fruit flies can be more than just a slight nuisance. These pests can eventually become such a problem that they are in every room of your home, not just around the fruit on your counters. If you are experiencing an issue with these pests, you need to get control of them before you have a major issue in your home. Read on for some tips to help you get rid of these pesky flies.
Pour Bleach In Your Drains
Fruit flies can be nesting in the gunk in your drains, such as the hair and food particles that are clogging them. If fruit flies are in your drains and you see them flying in and out of them, you should pour bleach into the drain, but be sure to coat the edges of the pipe in your drain. You want to kill the flies in the drain, so if you don't pour close around the edge of the drain, you may miss them altogether. You can also pour boiling hot water down the drain as well if you don't want to use bleach.
Remove Fruit From Your Counters
Remove all fruit and vegetables from your counters until you are rid of these pests. They are going to be attracted to these items, so be sure to remove them and place them instead in your refrigerator for the time being. If you have any over-ripe fruit or rotting fruit, throw it out, and remove it from your home altogether. Sometimes a bag or bowl of fruit could contain a rotten piece that has gone undetected by you but is obvious to a fruit fly, and they have been feeding on this piece of rotting fruit.
Throw Out Trash More Often
Don't let your trash pile up in your home. You need to throw out the trash before it gets to this point to prevent attracting pests such as fruit flies. You should also clean out your trash container more often, as your garbage bag may have had a hole in it and leaked into the can. Wipe down the can with a bleach wipe, and keep it clean.
Use Fruit Fly Traps
Set out fruit fly traps to catch these pests and kill them. Traps such as fly tape or traps that contain apple cider vinegar can be very effective. Use these traps in the areas where you have seen these flies, and freshen the bait often.
If you have a problem with fruit flies, you need to get control of them before they get out of hand. Hire a pest control company to help you with this problem.
