Tips For Dealing With A Rodent Infestation

Posted on

Having a rodent infestation in your home can lead to some serious health problems for everyone living with you. The diseases rodents carry can ruin food that is not sealed, and the rodent droppings can be harmful to pets and children. If you have seen rodents in your home or the evidence that proves that they have been there, you'll want to follow some tips for dealing with them on your own.

Use The Right Bait

You may instinctively try to use cheese when attempting to catch a rodent in a trap. Cheese is actually not the best option for dealing with these pests. Try using peanut butter as a bait, which rodents tend to love because of its high protein. Peanut butter will also be harder to remove from traps by the rodents, making it more likely that you trap them instead of seeing the bait disappear.

Check Traps Frequently

If you are actively setting traps to try to catch the rodents, you should be checking on them frequently to ensure that they are cleared as soon as you successfully trap one of those pests. The longer a rodent spends in a trap is time lost that could be used to trap another one. Leaving a dead rodent in your home can also leave some very bad odors, so it is in your best interest to remove the pest right away.

If you are using humane traps that do not kill the pest, make sure that you release them very far from your home. If you release them right outside your home, they'll just find a way to get back inside right away.

Use Peppermint

Are you trying to keep rodents away instead of trapping them? Try using things that have a very strong smell as a way to drive them away. For instance, putting peppermint near points of entry can stop the pest from coming inside. If you place peppermint in your kitchen, the smell can mask the smell of food, making them leave and look somewhere else to get nourishment.

Seal Food

You will want to be extra diligent about keeping all of your food in sealed containers while there is a rodent infestation. Not only will it stop the pests from finding food in your home, but prevent it from being contaminated with disease and to be thrown away.
