Why Rodents Are Coming Inside And What You Can Do About Them

Posted on

Rodents are scavengers out looking for anything they can to feed themselves and their families. These scavengers will come into your home, garage, or even your workplace looking for something to nibble on. Rodents will come back year after year when the weather turns cold, and they will continue going back to the same place where they have had luck finding food. Read on for reasons why rodents keep coming back to your house and what you can do about them.

They're Looking For Warmth

Rodents will come inside when it begins to cool down outside in order to survive. They come in looking for warmth and will eventually go back outside when the weather warms again. If you continue to have rodents in the winter, it's time to do some home maintenance. Make repairs to make it more difficult for rodents to get inside. Things such as broken seals around windows and doors make it easier for rodents to get into your home, as do cracks in foundations, or holes in siding. If you have a lot of clutter lying around your home, such as old bags of clothing, or even old shoes and stacks of paper (such as magazines or newspapers), get rid of all of this. Rodents will use these things for their nesting materials. You may also find other pests in these areas as well.

They're Looking For Water

Rodents need water much like other living things. If you have a small water leak, it can attract mice to your home. Check outside spigots or piping in basements and crawl spaces for water leaks. Make any necessary repairs. If you have leaky pipes beneath the sinks or leaky faucets, make these repairs as well. Water leaks can cost you in your water bill and in pest control fees as well. Several other pests can also be attracted to these areas of your home, meaning you could have more than one infestation.

They're Looking For Food

Rodents, of course, are going to come in looking for food to eat. They may not be looking for anything gourmet, even the tiniest of crumbs will feed rodents. They may also be scavenging through your pantry without you even noticing, often in that back section you haven't looked at in a while. Clear out your entire pantry, wipe down bottles of syrup, oil, and peanut butter, then place all of the food that isn't in air-tight packaging already into air-tight containers. This will prevent rodents from sniffing out your food items.  Also, be sure to clean up food preparation areas often and keep crumbs off of the floor by sweeping daily.

Rodents are going to keep coming back if you continue to give them what they are looking for. Talk to a pest control specialist about other tips to keep rodents away and to get rid of any you may already have. For more information, reach out to a company like Xtermco Inc today.
