Trapping Tips To Help You Catch Rats Outside Your Home
If you have seen numerous rats around the outside of your home, then it is time to start thinking about ways that you can kill the pests. Trapping is one possibility, but you do need to make sure that you have your traps set up correctly to ensure that you can actually trap the rats. Keep reading to learn about some trapping tips that can help you.
Place Traps Along Walls
Outdoor traps can be effective at killing rats, but you will need to make sure that the rodents come into contact with them in the first place. Rats tend to stay hidden and move along safe areas, meaning that they typically stay close to walls, homes, buildings, and other large objects. So, you want to place your traps in these areas where the rats are actively moving. Do not just place traps near your walls; you want them directly against the walls. This way, the rats need to actively walk around them or explore them when navigating your property.
Place traps right in the middle of each long wall area, and use one trap for about every 15 feet. This may translate to five or more traps around the perimeter of your home. While this may seem like a bit too much, singular rats will rarely make an appearance. You are far more likely to have two, three, or more rats around your house with offspring on the way. After all, a female rat can produce a full litter at least once every month.
Use Enclosed Traps
Snap traps rarely work when it comes to catching rats. Rats are intelligent, fearful of new objects, and unlikely to seek out food in any area that appears dangerous. This is especially true if the rat has other options available when it comes to food. So, you want to forgo the snap traps and opt for the enclosed trapping systems instead.
Enclosed rat traps work in a few different ways. They may live-trap the rat, they may use an internal snap trap, or they may have a setup that you can use to poison bait. And, in most cases, these traps are able to keep other animals from getting stuck, so you can be sure that dogs, cats, and other animals in the region are safe from harm.
Inside the trap you should place bait that releases an odor that is strong enough to encourage the rats to enter. Peanut butter, bacon, chocolate, and hot dogs are all good choices.
